"A man who
could retain through his golfing career the
almost scornful confidence of the non-player would be
unbeatable" - PG Wodehouse, The Heel of Achilles
Rated number one on the card,
the Eighth is a long par four
dogleg to the left.
Although marginally
longer than the seventh, the higher degree
of difficulty is more due to the water hazard (Cox's Creek) that
must be carried, 140 metres from the tee. This hazard is largely
a mental one, but no less effective for that.
Although the low marker
has no problem, a pulled (right-handed)
or sliced (left-handed) drive will see the average player in the
hazard. A drive hit down the right side of the fairway can land on
the bank and run down to finish well-placed on the fairway.
The second shot might require a long iron or fairway wood, but
played from a level lie, for once. A shot aimed to the right of the
green, up the slope on the high side of the fairway, stands a good
chance of running down onto the green. Use less club than would
normally be required for the distance.
