04 November 2002
Editorial
Year 2002 has been busy indeed for Mt. Lofty. First, the long
awaited General Meeting was held with an extraordinarily large turnout
of members. It's good to see this kind of interest. Most of you will
know by now that the decision of the meeting was that the Club should
not consider the proposal to sell the club to outside interests that
promised considerable upgrades to the facilities. Most members, I
think, were concerned about possible loss of membership rights.
Second, we managed to sell the Schocroft bore land for
something over $170,000. This will work wonders for Club finance.
Third, we farewelled Matthew Dent, Club Professional for
nearly a decade. Matthew takes his expertise to Blackwood.
Finally, we welcomed Warren Symons, from Hahndorf, as our new
Pro. Warren impressed members years ago when he was Ted Williams'
"Aspro". At this stage I recall going through one of those well-known
phases in which one tries anything to play reasonable golf again. An
unorthodox book came to light. It was entitled, "The Golf Swing of the
Future," written by Minden Blake, an English scientist. The book helped
a bit, but no-one could help me with putting its tenets into practice
since they had no idea what I was trying to achieve. Warren offered to
read the book and then give me a lesson. How's that for service.
Welcome back, Warren. Good luck and "have a nice stay."
Just a thought, or a plea, really. Golfers should try
remembering their score for a hole at least until after they have hit
off on the next tee? Try it! Players can save ten minutes every round
by driving immediately they reach the tee instead of fossicking around
with cards when it's their honour. Some clubs suggest that the first to
reach the tee drives off regardless of honour. Another thing, if you
have a good joke, tell it while walking between shots, not while fellow
competitors are waiting to hit.

President's Report
Well! Summer is fast approaching and the golf course is
looking good. The twilight competitions have started and a new
competition will be held. The Rob Paddick putter will be an aggregate
event, of which the best 4 of 6 scores will decide the winner. The
event is open to all 5, 6 and 7 day members and will be keenly
contested. Be there.
On Sunday the 24th November 2002 a working bee is being held
to tidy some areas of the course, a list is displayed in the clubhouse.
Many hands make light work and drinks and a B B Q will follow, so put
this in your diary and I look forward to seeing you there.
Congratulations to Scott Hayes who has been selected to play
in the State Junior Team, a great achievement Scott.
Our lady members continue to work tirelessly for the club and
I thank them for this. The ladies had their AGM last Thursday and Sybil
Mulroney has been elected President, congratulations Sybil. Thank you
to the outgoing President, Marion Cartwright for her service on the
ladies committee. Marion's service to the Committee of Management is
ongoing. I thank her for her support.
Congratulations also to our caterer Cindy who once again as
been nominated for the A.B.I.A. awards. Bookings are firm for
functions, which will see our revenue improve. Cindy has been busy
promoting an upcoming event at the Club "The Big Wedding" on the 18th
November. I know Cindy's expertise in this area and hope this promotion
is successful for her.
The Corporate Membership package is about to be aggressively
marketed. This is a seven day membership targeted at the Corporate
Sector pointing the facilities on offer at Mt. Lofty Club.
Phillip Middleton has been appointed in the role of Secretary
Manager and his keenness in the future of the club is evident.
Matthew Dent has now moved on to Blackwood and we wish him
well in his new position and thank him for his service to our club.
Warren Symons, previously a trainee at Mt. Lofty and professional at
Hahndorf, has been appointed as Professional. Warren is very
enthusiastic about his new position and we welcome him to the team.
I would like to thank my fellow committee members for their
ongoing efforts.
Yours in Golf,
Ross Deans.
President.
