Friday, 12 May 2000 Celebrating 75 Years of Golf, 1925 - 2000 Editorial Our great Club is now five years beyond its allotted three score and ten but, like many of its staunch old members, still on its feet. The celebrations are over and we can now get back to serious golf, well, not too serious! Wasn't it splendid to see so many old faces over the Club's birthday weekend. Saturday afternoon, particularly, brought a number of oldies out of their several crevices and some of them could still play good golf. Don Price, former secretary/manager, Danny Watson, once president and Merv Woodhead, one of our past captains were there, to name a few. Fred Biddle, still a regular playing member, did yet another of his boy scout acts and arrived with old Les Hill. Fred dropped Les off, went home and then picked him up again after the dinner, probably getting home after midnight. While talking to Les during the afternoon, I thought how curious it is that some of us love to boast of our old age once we turn about 60. Anyway, Les was very proud to tell me that he is 98 years old. He was a mere lad of 23 years when the Club began, though he did not join until quite some years after that. Speaking of years, it was a wonderful surprise to see the old 1930s insignia in use again. For what seemed like 'donkey's ages', Alf Cox and I lobbied various committee members, without much success, to persuade them to resurrect this old work of art. It really was a delight to see it make a comeback on wine labels, items of clothing and the like over the last few weeks, even if only for a short time. It has everything in the design; the summit obelisk, golf clubs and ball, old clubhouse and even Golden Wattle. For its final rebirth we have our professional, Matthew Dent, to thank. He made it happen. "Perhaps we could think again about replacing the current, rather bland one over a time!" |
