What Happened to Old ...

Graham Hughes.

Graham joined Mt. Lofty in June 1987 while waiting for his Grange Golf Club membership to come up. When it did, about five years ago, he took it up only to return here because he missed us so much. If the truth's know, Craig Morton was running short of Graham's side bet dollars every week so talked him into coming back here.

Now living at West Lakes, Graham has taken the sensible option of rejoining Grange. Craig wonders how long it will be before he comes back; maybe after retirement in a year or two.

Graham was quite entertaining to play with because he was so impudent. I find it hard to enjoy playing with over-polite golfers, though, as 'Huw' Wynter would say, "He's not a bad chap for a Welshman."

One of Graham's lesser attributes, according to John Gilleade, is that he is a Manchester United supporter. He returned for our 75th celebrations, on April Fools' Day. Appropriately? He's welcome any time, so long as brings his small change!

Have You Noticed?

  1. The original Club logo was resurrected during the Club's 75th celebrations. It really is a colourful affair and one might find it hard to understand why it was ever relinquished. Visit the Pro shop for merchandise featuring this old work of art.
  2. Birds On Our Course. Illustrated, updated lists of local birds are on display around the clubhouse. The following people contributed to the beautiful presentation: Glenis Kuhlmann, Matthew Dent, Tony Burnell. To each of them - Thank you very much for your time, effort, skills and materials.
  3. Handicap Changes. A.G.U. Rules changed on 1/1/00. Here is a brief summary:
For fields of 2-20 the CCR will be the ACR.
For fields of 21± the CCR is based on 12½% of the field.
Stipulated rounds of 9 holes or more may be used for handicapping.
Of the 5 cards for an initial handicap, 3 or more must be from the Home Club.
For handicaps to 4.4: scores worse than 5 strokes over - add .2
    Non-returned cards - add .2

75th Anniversary Celebrations

We had a great weekend for our 75th Anniversary celebrations on 1st and 2nd April. On Saturday 170 members played the Stableford competition with great prizes including nearest the pin on all Par 3s, long drive, prizes for the ladies event and also prizes for each grade. Saturday night saw 150 members and friends dining in the clubhouse when Don Riddell had us in stitches "going down memory lane". It was great to see so many old friends, past Presidents and Captains, and not least of all Les Hill who is now in his 99th year.

Sunday was a glorious Autumn day with a 9 hole competition. Our Family Fun Day was a great success with many members and visitors having a go at the Nearest the Pin and Hole in One Competition (from the dam wall to the 16th green) and also the putting competition. The Junior golf tuition and the Wilson Go Go Golf went well with Nick McCormack and 30 juniors taking part.

A big thank you to the 75th Celebrations Subcommittee who have been working for the past 3 months to organise the weekend. The subcommittee consisted of Jan Seedsman, Marion Cartwright, Pam Callaghan, Di Kempe, Sybil Mulroney, Craig Morton, Matthew Dent, John Gilleade, Cindy Westphalen and Marg and Phil from the Bar. Also many thanks to all the volunteers who helped over the weekend and in the weeks beforehand painting and gardening.

Membership

A good response was received to the mail drop in the Hills and we hope more of these enquiries will be converted into membership. Over the 75th Anniversary weekend we had 5 new members sign up and we felt that the publicity received locally and in the advertising from this event certainly gave the club good media exposure and again we look forward to membership conversions.

Sponsorship

Have you noticed the new tee signs? They look really good, are of a very high quality and the response from members has been positive. However, there is space for more and we would eventually like to see them placed on all Tees - both men's and ladies, where appropriate. If any member is interested please contact John Gilleade for further information.
