Just Joking

This story, published in one of the local dailies a while ago, is worth reprinting. It's more amusing because it's true.

One Saturday early in the new century, Bill arrived at Mount Lofty Golf Club, parked and switched off the engine. Parked next to Bill was Shippy who became concerned when Bill remained in his car.  When he eventually investigated Bill said, "The Bug has struck. The radio won't switch off. Maybe I'd better disconnect the battery."

"Try removing the fuse, first" Shippy proposed.

"Good idea," agreed Bill, lifting the bonnet to remove the cover of the fuse box. "These fuses identify the parts protected, but there's no flamin' fuse for the radio. I'll disconnect the battery."

"O.K.," said Shippy, who by now had moved into Bill's front seat. "Battery disconnected, clock's stopped, BUT THE FLIPPIN' RADIO'S STILL ON!"

"Oh sh..!" cried Bill, "I knew I should have had the car checked for The Bug.

Looking about for an answer, Shippy noticed something on the floor partly obscured by the seat, picked it up to find a small transistor radio still switched on. He passed the good news to Bill, who silently reconnected the battery, got back in and started the car.

"Clock's working. Time's wrong. Radio's on, but a strange station." Bill muttered weakly, "My wife'll kill me unless I get this fixed before I get home."

Answer to Rules Question

None! 'A' is almost correct but the Rules book, being more precise, says - "The ball is on the putting green when any part of it touches the putting green". (See Definition Rule 16).

'B' The Rules book does not mention fairway, but it would be reasonable to apply the "on the green" rule if needed.

'C' is wrong. The Definition in Rule 27 says "A ball is out of bounds when all of it lies out of bounds"..

The Elusive Albatross

A few years back Mt. Lofty golfer Sean Steed scored a well documented albatross (3 under par) on our 16th hole. In the Mt. Lofty Amateur last year. Flagstaff Hill golfer Mark Tan scored his "double eagle" (American for albatross) on our 9th hole. Matthew Deans told me he recently scored an albatross on a computer golf game, but I'm sure his talent will eventually bring about the real thing!

The most famous albatross of all occurred during the 1935 Masters at Augusta. The legendary Gene Sarazen, who died last year, performed the feat under exceptional circumstances. In the final four holes of the fourth round, Sarazen was trailing Craig Wood by 3 strokes. Wood was already prematurely celebrating his 282 total "victory" in the clubhouse. To even tie Wood's total, Sarazen would have to birdie 3 of the last 4 holes, or do something sensational on the par 5 fifteenth. He launched a big drive from the 15th tee, but still had another 240 yards, across water to the green. He chose a 4 wood and holed out! He shot par on 16, 17 and 18 and then had to defeat Wood in a 36 hole play off. Sarazen's playing partner in that Masters was Walter Hagen, who said he had never seen a shot like it before or since.

Sarazen did us all a favour also by inventing the sand wedge. He was the first golfer to win the 4 majors, i.e., U.S. Masters, Open, P.G.A., and British Open, at least once.

Who will be the next Mt. Lofty golfer to score an albatross?

John Ryan.

From The Lady Members

Season 2000 had a very good start for the lady members with our Mt.. Lofty players regaining the Mt.. Shield in a convincing win over Mount Osmond at home in March. Congratulations to all who played.

The teams for interclub matches have had mixed success so far. Pennant team has not lost a match but the Cleek and Hickory Stick teams, while very competitive, are struggling a bit.

We have all been caught up in the 75th anniversary

celebrations which provided a wonderful weekend of events. It just goes to show that if you put in the hard work you reap the rewards. Congratulations to Margaret Wood and her sub committee.

At the first of the Golden Oldies lunches this week

we had a good group of retired and semi retired members getting together for lunch and a chat. It was great to see so many and we hope the good attendance continues for the rest of the season. I believe they are all planning on being present for the finals of our Club Championships later in the year.
