November 2000
From The Editor

Just returned from a wonderful five weeks or so in the Mediterranean by way of Germany, France and Spain; then on board the Orient Line's cruise ship, Marco Polo, to Italy, Greece, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Croatia, Crete, Cyprus and Egypt. Got a bit of golf practice on board, winning both the putting and the chipping competitions. No handicaps either! Mind you, most of the other competitors were Americans, who, between throwing money and worrying about the 'dodo' elections, didn't realize that one had to allow for dramatic breaks resulting from the roll and pitch of the ship. By the time they did it was too late. Don't ask me to show you the prizes. They were stolen, together with clothing, from our bags at Singapore airport!

Here's a bit of a golfing joke involving a tour guide on a trip to Cairo, Giza, the pyramids and the Sphinx. As we approached Cairo, he pointed out a huge fence on our left, explaining that it hid some earthworks marking the construction of the city's FIRST golf course. Cairo has 17,000,000 inhabitants; 18,000,000 on any working day. Some waiting list!

Anyway, what with bombs in Barcelona after we left it; stones, bullets and bombs before we got to Palestine, and then flying Singapore Airlines the day of their Asian crash, I'm seriously considering entering the 'witness protection programme'. Someone out there is trying to get me!

It's good to be back, even though the Saturday competition fees at MLGC are now 2,600,000 Turkish lira a pop.

Speaking of Barcelona, this item was Emailed to me STOP PRESS by the President.

From The President

I always think Mount Lofty looks its best in spring and autumn and this year has been no exception. The course has recovered well from heavy winter rains and the rhododendrons and camellias have been splendid over recent weeks.

Managing small golf clubs is highly competitive business and our spring/summer membership drive is in full flow. We hope many of you have seen the new TV advert appearing on Channel 10. This has been possible only with the help of Brian Price who summarizes in 30 seconds why Mount Lofty is such a wonderful place to play golf for men, women, and juniors. It is hoped that the advert together with the mail drop we've been doing will boost membership numbers and enhance our financial stability.

The recent Melbourne Cup event was a huge success as was Matthew's Charity day on 15th November. At the presentation Matt was able to give "Canteen" a cheque for $6020 which was a splendid effort by the Club pro and his team.

The annual golf trip to Renmark took place over the weekend of 17th to 19th November and was attended by 26 players. Brian and Marion Cartwright organized the event superbly and we're encouraging them to do it again next year. If you're a newer member and haven't played in any of these special events please give them a go; starting with the Chicken run on Friday 8th of December or the Christmas Ambrose on Sunday 17th December. They're always a lot of fun.

Jack McKean. President.
