Course

With the cold months now behind us we can look forward to some great golf months ahead. During the winter months the wet, soggy areas have been identified and finances permitting, will be fixed during the coming months to make our golf a little better for next winter.

A mapping meeting was instigated to detail all piping and drainage on each fairway, tee and green.

Steve Pellatt, course superintendent, has once again expressed concern about the number of plug marks not repaired on greens, which cause disease in some cases. If you don't have a plug repair tool in your bag, please purchase one from the professional shop and please use it

New signs have been placed at the entrance to the 9th and 15th where the Heysen Trail crosses these fairways. Members are advised that walkers on the trail have right of way.

What Happened to Old ...

Frank Millbank
From delicatessen ownership in his early career, Frank moved into real estate where he worked until retirement. He joined the Club in September 1955, resigning in recent years through age and ill health. He had many friends, some still Club members.

One great mate was the late Ted Brodribb (Joined 1957), a wonderful man and capable golfer. When the Club was young, hardly a Mixed Event passed without these two buddies 'manning' our old piano for a sing song and late drinks on Sunday evening with the rest of the gang.

The Millbanks, Frank and Clytie, (who died in 1997), as well as the Brodribbs, Ted and Bern, were much involved in the planning and laying out of the 'new' second nine at the Club during the sixties. Frank was justly proud of maintaining a handicap of eleven for some years, playing Pennant golf and also winning the B Grade Summer Cup in 1983.

Members will remember him as that slender type, lugging a diminutive carry bag around the course on Wednesdays and Saturdays in his later years. Another of our 'gentleman' golfers of very long standing, Frank will always command a place in my memory as one of those people who made Mt. Lofty the great place it is.

Frank's daughter, Julie Michelmore, a very fine golfer herself, remains a very active member of the Club. It is sad that current Club practice relating to past members precludes the formal, courteous acknowledgment of their achievements posthumously.

Have You Noticed?

The number of cart paths appearing on course? These help to protect grassed areas from wear and tear, especially in wet months.

The much improved fairway grass now that the weather has warmed up. No more preferred lies, remember! (Except the first.)
The huge pine tree that fell during a recent storm and almost took the old house near the twelfth green with it.
The handsome barbecue with its gazebo on the 6th tee is now 'run in'. On Saturdays volunteers man the 'barbie' and generate healthy income for our Pennant teams by selling food and running a book for 'greenies' and birdies.
The score on the lake now seems to be WHITE DUCKS 2 … FOXES and friends 2. Unfortunately all valiant attempts to help the ducks breed seem to have been futile and two of the original four have disappeared.
