That's History

Just a little history was made this year when one of our esteemed members, former captain, Wayne Wilkes, featured in the winning teams of both the Mixed Foursomes and Men's Foursomes Championship events. This is the first time anyone has been part of both winning Champ. teams in the one season. Sharing the honours with Wayne were Joy Page and Ross Deans. Well done!

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mrs Jan Seeds-man presented the trophies for the 2000 season, after which members enjoyed a light lunch. Guest Day was rescheduled to November 9th due to bad weather conditions in September. Sixty players took part and it was a delight to see a number of past members returning to play which certainly added to the happy atmosphere in the Clubhouse. Congratulations go to our Captain, Jill Freer on winning the WGSA Council Appreciation Trophy at an event held at Mt. Lofty in October.

The Ladies Committee extends best wishes for good golfing in 2001 to all Club Members.

Roney on the Rules

A player knew that The Rules allow three ways to gain relief (with penalty) for an unplayable lie:-

a) Go back and replay the original stroke.
b) Drop a ball within two club lengths.
c) Go back on a line to the hole.

In this instance his ball was embedded in a bunker. May he declare the ball unplayable? If so, which of the above options may he adopt for relief? See later for answer.

Why Do I Love Mount Lofty

I had not intended to 'wax lyrical' about our golf club in an exaggerated way, but possibly many members feel the same way about some things. Here are some of the features I feel make Mt. Lofty one of the most beautiful courses in Australia.

The views from the second and twelfth tees are magnificent. It is hard to visualize a more panoramic sweep than the sights from the twelfth tee, despite how we've played previous eleven holes.
I never cease to wonder at the quality and variety of the rhododendrons around the eighteenth tee. This year they have never looked better.
The trees forming the background behind the challenging eighth green are a picture.
When you've putted out on the 18th and look across the lake to the 16th green, does it remind you a little of America's great Augusta layout?
Our 32 year old clubhouse still evokes visitor comments such as; "magic", "very relaxing", "beautiful views", and "so informal and welcoming". I couldn't agree more.
It is a tribute to past management and older members that the old 'perfume factory' (greenkeepers cottage) is still standing and very much in use. It looks so picturesque standing on the hill as viewed from the clubhouse.
I love the irreverent comments and gamesmanship in competitions at Mt. Lofty. This is a sign of true camaraderie. Let's hope it never changes.
How many of us appreciate the beautifully designed honour boards showing competition winners; holes in one, etc., on the two walls in the clubhouse? They could hardly be bettered.
Our Pro Shop's friendly 'two Matthews' puts us in a good mood for competitions!

Does any other course in Adelaide exist?

John Ryan.
