A tongue-in-cheek account of Naming
Rites!
Clubs were well advised when they
abandoned the term 'Associate' once used to describe women
golfers! The term was demeaning, though a few un-enlightened clubs still
use it. It is interesting that most golfing women, nationwide, are still
called "lady members". Blokes are rarely called, "gentleman
members". Signs on golf club change rooms will have "Ladies
Locker Room" and "Men's Locker Room". Even the 'GolfLink'
handicap computer screens give details of "Men's" and
"Ladies' Competitions. What about "blokes"
and "sheilas" for a change or, as at an outback club, Pars
and Birdies. I know it's not vitally important, but it is an odd
aberration considering how often one is urged to be politic in
these gender matters.
Apropos of this, one of our notice
boards recently displayed a curious advice directed to "Male
Members". When I quizzed a barrister friend about the
expression, he assured me that if a witness told the constabulary that a
male member had been discovered lying on the floor at the scene
of the crime, the coppers would not head off expecting to find a
recumbent gentleman golfer! (His explanation was somewhat more
coarse!). Sometimes these 'naming rites' are taken to extreme. For
instance, there was an article in the 'Tiser' recently about a pregnant actor?
Clever chap! Language is not static, but forced and pointless changes to
it really do give birth to confusion. I think there's an unintentional
pun there somewhere! Mark that with the demise of the word actress,
there are Oscar awards for best male or female actor.
Do you hear people complain if a property
for auction is called a 'gentleman's residence'? It's Crazy!
Pardon? Yes! The Club's new blue wren logo de-picts a colourful male.
Do you want the grey one?
Anyway, I'm not playing in Mixed
Competitions this season. There's a distinct lack of 'loose women' for
partners - too many ladies, I surmise!

The President
I've been out of Adelaide for a few weeks
but got back in time to play today (March 18) in the Mount Lofty
President's Cup. This is an individual Stableford event, open to all
members; the difference being that you're only allowed to use 3 clubs
(any 3 of your choice). Thanks to Matthew's strong promotion we had a
reasonable field and played in perfect autumn conditions. Paul Benuzzi
won with a remarkable 43 points and current Club Champion Ben Tobin was
runner up. Next year Matthew plans a shotgun start so we get back to the
clubhouse at the same time for the barbecue and presentation.
I was also pleased to see how well the
course has withstood an incredibly hot and dry summer. The dams are low
and we need some good winter rains.
Margaret Wood's House, Social and
Membership Committee continues to promote the Club actively in an effort
to increase membership. Our "Open Day" takes place on Sunday
1st April and this event will be promoted in the "Tiser" on
Monday, 26th March.
We're also promoting Mount Lofty to the
social Clubs of various banks, legal and accounting firms and other
companies in an effort to attract Trade days and new members.
Graham Gamble is organizing a Quiz night
on Friday, 18th May, so put that in your diary and get a table together.
Finally, the "Blue Wren"
featured on clothing sold in the pro shop has been officially adopted as
the new Club logo. The current logo is very tired and dated, whereas the
wren is timeless and a familiar character to all members and visitors at
Mount Lofty.
