What
Happened to Old ...?
Jack Brooks.
Jack joined the Club on May 1st, 1968, to become one of our
long-standing members until his resignation on March 31st, 1998.
Both Jack and his wife, Barbara, played
many a game at Mt. Lofty and enjoyed the company of other members on
Mixed Days as well as in individual competitions. On one occasion,
January 31st 1988, to be exact, Barb, Jack, Christine and I played in an
Ambrose, (I suppose it's still an Ambrose - the Americanism
'Scramble' is rapidly supplanting the traditional name), coming home
with in 29 off the stick on the back nine for a net 49. Probably not a
record but we thought it pretty good. This performance was in no small
way the result of Jack's absolute consistency. It's not surprising that
Jack won a number of trophies simply by playing regularly to his
handicap or a bit below.
I can picture him on his front lawn after
work, practising his swing with a club and a few plastic, 'holey' balls.
This is one reason that he retained an A Grade handicap for so many
years.
A great fan of Bradman, Jack had
something of 'The Don' in him, and played some pretty good cricket in
his time. Now his grand children can't escape the odd game in the
backyard at "grand-mum's".
When Barbara could no longer cope with
our slopes and hills, she joined Mt. Barker. Jack plays there too, at
times, though business and nagging ill health have reduced his
participation somewhat.
The couple still live in the Uraidla area
and are of-ten seen playing the odd game at Mt Lofty in the company of
dauntless June and Ron Willsmore.
Sorry we've lost you, Jack. Get back to
serious golf soon while you're still young enough to enjoy it!

- Regularly
playing off the blue tees in competitions makes the course more

one of the driest spells for years and during a light shower of

you make a habit of chasing the ducks (actually Maned Geese)
whenever you see them chomping away at our greens and fairways, they
will tend to look for more congenial pastures - perhaps Mt. Barker

the Rules of Golf do not allow you a free drop from a road or path

The white plastic hole liners
These have
recently been reintroduced.
For players to
get full benefit the liners must a-ways be correctly in place.
Misplacement and damaged often results from golfers using a
putter to remove the ball from the hole.
At $3.00 to
replace a liner this can be expensive over 12 months.
Save your money for better purposes.
