Reminiscence
Anyone who enjoys golf, will enjoy the
film, "The Legend of Bagger Vance", showing around town. It's
set in 1931 in Savannah, Georgia. 'Bagger' is a guardian angel type
caddie, played brilliantly by Negro actor, Will Smith.
The hero of the story has to play 72
against golfing greats, Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. The actors playing
them are the image of these famous golfers compared with old photographs
I have seen of them. It was fascinating to see the styles of 1931: plus
fours (plus twos are in style now), bow ties and long patterned socks.
Jones gave up golf at 28, having won 13
national titles in 8 years, including the 'Grand Slam' in 1930. He was
an amateur, retiring to become a lawyer.
Hagen is shown exactly as in real life;
pompous, a womanizer, carefree, flamboyant dresser and intense
competitor. All of this comes out in the film. Hagen won more than 60
international tournaments and four consecutive PGA championships.
Apart from the legends, there is a good
story too.
The narrative is provided by Jack Lemmon,
who plays an ageing hacker. Sound familiar?

Please phone the Professional Shop to cancel if you can't
make your tee time.
The Club regularly has what appears to be a full
booking sheet and a number of members wait to slot into
cancelled times.
If you do not cancel as early as possible, these members do
not get to play, because there seems no time is available.
