What Happened to Old...?
D'arcy Driscoll.

D'arcy was Club Secretary/Manager (termed Club Secretary at the time) from 1948 to 1963, making him our longest serving staff member to hold that post. It seems incredible that he was awarded a stipend equivalent to a mere $264 a year plus a travel allowance of $1 a week. Much of the time he worked in an honorary capacity.

When I joined, in 1959, I would have handed my cheque for 28 guineas ($56.20); 14 joining fee and 14 subscription, to D'arcy in his little galvanised iron office that was not much more than an out-house.

He was a keen and capable golfer; one of that rare breed of gentlemen golfers, in fact.
Sad to say, D'arcy died just recently. We continue to honour his memory and are grateful that his wife, Nan, still graces Mt Lofty with her presence. Nan is one of four revered Life Members of the Club.

Roney on the Rules

A player's ball is buried in a deep bunker, near the edge.
Rather than try to play it out he declares the ball un-playable intending to drop it outside the bunker (with the 1 stroke penalty).
What is your ruling?

Have You Noticed?

  1. The cart paths being constructed on the course? These are meant to reduce cart, buggy and even foot traffic across playing areas.
  2. Worm casts that appear on fairways in winter? No penalty for teeing up on these during our preferred lie period, but if you use pressure to keep the ball from rolling off, you incur a penalty. Also, there is a penalty if the ball falls off, and it must be replaced. Hardly worth the risk!
  3. That our assistant professional, Matthew Deans has distinguished himself in his golfing professional studies again? Two credits in his recent examinations. Great stuff, Matt.
  4. The Pennant Jackpot drawn Saturdays during announcements, is over $300? Playing category members are eligible if in the 19th for the draw.
  5. The grand new bridge over Cox Creek on the 18th? Jack of All Trades, master of them all and Club employee, Tom Hands, was responsible for much of the complicated work. Masterly, Tom!
  6. The new rain water tank near the 6th gazebo?

That's History

Some members might have been puzzled after receiving an AGM report titled "43rd Annual Report" when, in fact, the Club is in its 77th year. The explanation is that the report is the 43rd since the Club's incorporation under its current name and constitution. In 1925, it was Mt. Lofty Golf Club Limited. It then became The Mt Lofty Golf Estate Limited, and finally The Mt Lofty Golf Club Incorporated.

Just Joking

Two Sassenack golfers, both named Alan, playing at Mt Lofty one day, arrived at the water hole at the 10th. Alan, the shorter, (he follows Tottenham), hit his drive and sent it into the middle of dam, which is a mild version of what he said when he did it.

He reached into his bag and found that he had no balls left. He asked Alan, the taller, for a ball and promptly hit that into the damned dam too. This went on until he requested the 6th ball from Big Al.

BA replied, "Alan, mate, you've had five already, and these balls cost me a lot of money."

Li'l Al thought, then said, "Alan, lad, if you can't afford to play the game, you shouldn't be out here ".
