The Editor,
Dear Frank,
Much has been said about getting the Club back on a firm footing
financially. I reckon the financial health of a club is inseparable from
its tone.
Let me put it this way. Members elect
a Committee; they must support that Committee. Conversely, the Committee
is required to consider the needs of the members who elected it or at
least allowed it to be elected.
Our Committee chose to employ a
Manager; let it then support that Manager together with the rest of the
administrative staff it appointed. This will logically apply to other
staff such as the Course Superintendent and his people.
Only if this support is forthcoming
can staff be expected to be loyal to Committee and members. While there
is any lack of it or hint of dissent within the Club, an atmosphere
persists that affects the way prospective and current members perceive
it.
Let's all display a positive image of Mt. Lofty Golf Club; not merely an
advertising facade every so often.
Sincerely,
Dr. Watson.

Secretary/Manager
WINTER PLAYING CONDITIONS
I draw members' attention to Rule 6-8a. Discontinuance of play -
when permitted. This is particularly relevant to competitions held
during winter.
The Player shall not discontinue play
unless:
I. The Committee has suspended play.
II. The player believes there is a danger from lightning.
III. The player is seeking a decision from the Committee on a doubtful
or disputed point (see Rules 2-5 and 34-3) or
IV. There is some other good reason such as sudden illness.
Bad weather is not of itself a good reason for discontinuing play.
JUNIOR
DEVELOPMENT
Matthew Dent, Jill Freer and Hamilton McNicol have introduced a
junior programme.
We now have over 60 keen boys and girls
regularly attending clinics. Assistance is continually needed with
tuition, administration and barbecue duties.
This requires a little time and effort
once a month.
Please contact Matthew Dent to join the
team.
LOCAL RULE AND COURSE CHANGES
Everyone should now be aware that our winter local rule regarding
preferred lies is in force.
"A preferred lie may be taken on the
closely mown surface of the hole in play. The position of the ball
should be marked, the ball may be cleaned and placed within one club
length, not nearer the hole"
The new drain works on the 12th hole are
G.U.R.
More drain construction has commenced on
the right side of the 7th fairway. This is also G.U.R.
At the recent Course/Match Committee
meeting it was decided that since the ground in and around the new drain
on the 4th hole had recovered well since construction, the drain should
now be identified as a hazard. Red stakes along the lower length of the
drain now identify it as a lateral water hazard.
The creek bank in front of the 4th green
is becoming seriously damaged. Players are asked not to climb up the
bank from the creek edge but walk to the extreme right or left before
walking onto the green.
